our history
Dutton Cycles may have only recently opened its doors, but the vision of this shop has been alive in the mind’s of Scott and Kurt Dutton for as long as they can remember.
Cycling has been a constant in the Dutton family for four generations.

Albert Dutton, Kurt and Scott’s grandfather, rode Track competitively in the 1930’s, racing in Brisbane’s top category and he was actively involved in various clubs around Brisbane. He took two of his sons, Ron and Allan to the old Hawthorn Velodrome one Sunday, where the organisers called for entrants in an impromptu school boy’s race. Despite never racing before, Ron won that race, and caught the cycling bug.

Ron raced competitively, taking out a State Road Title, and being selected to represent Queensland for Track at the Nationals. He was a Team Manager for the visiting Japanese SunTour team in the Commonwealth Bank Classic, and many people in the industry will remember Ron as their local rep, working with brands such as Malvern Star. Ron actively contributed to the growth and development of the sport, and was President of Hamilton Pine Rivers Wheelers, was a Club Representative in Cycling Queensland, was a Commissaire, and regularly coached riders in both Road and Track.
Ron passed on his passion for cycling and the industry to his family, with all the kids racing and riding from a young age. His wife Grace was also a volunteer at many of the events and races, and was constantly involved behind the scenes supporting her boys in their cycling. Grace’s untiring efforts at cycling events over 15 years, was a catalyst in shaping Scott and Kurt’s beliefs in giving back to the sport.
It was also from a young age that Ron taught Kurt and Scott about building and maintaining bikes, and the importance of doing it properly. The learning experience even became a family event with the kitchen table being commandeered when there was a pre-race service required, or if someone was lucky enough to get a new bike.
After leaving school, Scott followed in his dad’s footsteps and entered the cycling industry. Scott’s talent and passion for bikes was recognised early, when he was offered a job by a leading distributor before he had even finished Year 12. Scott has stayed in the industry all this time, and with 20 years of experience, has a wealth of knowledge on all things cycling.
Kurt also stayed in the cycling community, but on the competitive front. Starting in C Grade, Kurt made his way through the ranks and currently races Elite Men’s – Road, Track and MTB. Kurt’s career highlight was taking out the Elite Men’s State Road Title in 2004, just like his dad. His interest in bikes saw him change careers and follow his brother into the industry where he has worked as a mechanic for the last 3 years. Kurt was also the mechanic for Team Merida, the elite men’s team of which his was Captain.

Scott and Kurt’s older brother Brad is also an avid cyclist, and his three daughters Brittany, Maddison and Courtney Dutton all race both road and track. Courtney is also a very successful Tri-Athlete, and was recently selected to represent Australia in the Junior World Triathlon Championships in Europe.
Both Kurt and Scott are passionate about bikes, and recognise how much they’ve benefited from the sport. While Dutton Cycles may seem an obvious choice for the name of the shop, Kurt and Scott hope that this shop will maintain the standard and commitment to the sport and industry of the Dutton’s before them, while providing an avenue for them to share their knowledge and experience with their customers and staff.
They thank you for joining them on this journey.
